Masjid ul- Haqq, located at 514 Wilson Street, Baltimore is the first mosque constructed over sixty-years ago to serve the Islamic population in Baltimore City. “This historic masjid has given birth to several masajid in Baltimore city as most of the Imams and Heads were tutored from Haqq” noted Sajjaad Washington, the Acting Imam.

In a bid to give a face-lift to the old structure, the masjid has established a fund raising committee to champion the renovation project. According to Sajjaad Washington, “the masjid has been faced with a financial situation ... we have not been able to pay our Imam. Since Ramadan is a very important month which stressed on charity, we’ve decided to take advantage of it and reach out to community people to help”. He added that “It is in this regard that the substantial amount of $100,000 is required to champion the renovation of the masjid’s old age building.”

Imam Sajjaad said that they have already put in place a proper communication strategy to effectively make use of social media (facebook, twitter) to achieve their objective in raising funds. He stated that flyers and posters have also been designed and produced and are being distributed. Newsletters, he added, have been created and distributed to various outlets as well as announcements during jumuah and prayer sessions in various masjids.

A grand dinner and family night are key activities lined up this Ramadan to garner the funds needed for the renovation project. Lectures will be delivered by the elders to explain the historic importance of the masjid, and why the community should not allow it to be ruined.
