On June 29, 2011, Dar Al-Hijrah released a statement welcoming the addition of Jose Acevedo as their new full-time youth coordinator. The new hire would be only the third full-time Muslim youth coordinator in the region; ADAMS Center in Herndon, Virginia hired Joshua Salaam a few years ago, and Dar-us-Salaam in College Park, Maryland hired Tawfeeq Aziz earlier this year. Most masajid across the nation recognize the dire need for full-time youth counselors and coordinators, yet very few are prepared to spend money on hiring qualified full-time youth coordinators.
Acevedo, who lives in Maryland, is well known for his counseling and educational programs for youth, particularly teenage youth. Along with long-time friend Ilyas Liggins, Acevedo ran several successful adventure camps for area youth involving hiking, white water rafting, and other sporting activities.
A masters degree holder in education, Acevedo is also a former vice-principal of Al-Huda School in College Park, Maryland, a former Principal of the Washington Islamic Academy, and he also founded and ran an academic mentoring program called Al-Andalus. During the past two years, Acevedo worked as an administrator at a school for at-risk youth.
“We are very excited to work with brother Jose Acevedo. He has shown great interest in our youth and the community as a whole. The Dar Al-Hijrah community is blessed to have someone who is as dedicated as brother Jose around our youth,” said the statement from Dar Al-Hijrah.
